Destination Love Shoot : Kelly + Michael : Millinocket, Maine
Paul + I have had quite an adventurous July, traveling all over to fotograph several love shoots and weddings. One of our journeys brought us to a secluded little logging town called Millinocket, Maine, the hometown of one Kelly, one of our brides, who is getting married next weekend to Michael, her fiance, who just happens to be from Paul's hometown of Stafford Springs (the place we call home and is also home to our studio!). Whoa! I think that might have a been a run-on sentence!
So we made the 6 hour road trip up to Millinocket, and enjoyed the beautiful weather and views on the way. We brought the kayaks with us, but we ended not having the time to use them (oh well). After checking in our quaint little hotel, The Hotel Terrace, we met up with Kelly + Michael at Kelly's parents home for some drinks (and smores!) by the campfire the evening before our big, adventurous shoot. Relaxing by the campfire was just what the doctor ordered, and was the perfect end to beautiful day's roadtrip.
Meet Kelly + Michael, a very outdoorsy couple, just like us : )

Then it was back to the hotel to retire for the evening. Doesn't this hotel look like it belongs in a David Lynch film?

The first spot Gerry took us to was the West Branch Penobscot River at the Cribworks.

One of many favorites from the day......

How cool is this? A kick-butt kayaker going pass us in the rapids- I didn't see him until he was in my shot, and I was able to catch him! Some of you may know that Paul + I love to kayak, but this guy is definitely an expert kayaker.....I don't think I'd ever have the guts to go in a river this choppy!

I adore this shot as well.....

Check it out! White water rafters this time!!! Paul + I did that one time when we were in Alaska, and it was so fun!!!
I think Kelly + Mike were enjoying the show.....I wonder what the rafters thought as they passed?

These two are so adorable together....we can't wait for their wedding day!

Mike was all smiles the whole day...could it be that Kelly makes him extremely happy?

BTW this spot was so gorgeous, we decided to work it for awhile!!! Can you blame us?

We hiked up a little ways to get another view.

Paul's fantastic shot with a Lensbaby!!! LOVE IT!!! I love how it makes the water really look like it's rushing past and the passion in this one is overwhelming to me!

Kelly's sparkley ring on the evergreens...perfect for a outdoorsy girl.

So peaceful....I wish I lived closer to here, because I'd be coming out to this spot all the time to sit and think.

Nature calls!

I could spend the whole day fotographing the beauty that you find when you're hiking. I makes me happy, and makes me feel like I'm one with nature : )

Paul + I are very adventurous, and will pretty much do anything to "get the shot." Lucky for us, and part of the reason we really click with Kelly + Mike, is that they are adventurous, outdoorsy people too. The second spot Gerry took us to was further up the West Branch Penobscot River, to the Ripogenus Gorge near McKay Station. We were hiking along and saw there was an very steep, rocky area to rope down to the Gorge!!! After securing our camera bags to our bodies, we each took turns roping down.
Paul heading down....

Here's Kelly coming down, after I made my way down. Can you tell we were having a blast playing Indiana Jones?

It was very much worth the "roping" down to this spot....it was so beautiful!

Paul fotographing our lovely couple. Way to get down and dirty Paul (as we always do when we shoot :)

Another favorite...

Mike took this one of Paul + I....

I love looking for cool rocks whenever I'm out in nature. Look at my lucky find!!! Rock on rock.

Wouldn't it be nice if everytime we hugged the one we loved we could be surrounded by such magnificent beauty?

I thought this was funny....a bug hangin' out on Paul's lens.

On my way back up, Paul took these shots of me. Pretty extreme right ; p

The view from the top of the Gorge. I'm in love with this sequence : )

..and I LOVE this one...

Continuing on our journey, we stopped at the The Abol Bridge Campground to take some shots going over the bridge.

Mt. Katahdin was making an appearance that day, so we took some shots with this beautiful mountain in the background.

Back in the car, we were driving down the road, and Paul suddenly spotted a moose! Now if your from Maine, this is a common and mostly unexciting site, but to us in Connecticut, we never see moose, just unlucky deer that wander into the road! So, we pulled over and hiked down to River Pond, where there was not only one moose, but two! Here is the bull moose and the cow was way to far away to get a decent shot of.

I have a thing for swamps and wetlands, and every time I pass one on the side of the road, I always want to stop and make beautiful images of it!
So when we first passed this swamp, I put it in my memory to stop there when we passed it again.
This is the River Pond Bog, and Kelly + Mike were excited enough by my vision to totally soak their sneakers and flip flops for the cause!

So worth it!

What a gentlemen, not having his lady sludge back through the murkiness!

We headed over the beautiful and huge Baxter State Park to visit a couple spots that Kelly grew up going to. Can you believe that when she was a girl, she actually slid down this natural rock slide? Crazy!!! It's actually not allowed anymore, because it is quite dangerous! This is called the Abol Sliding Rock. We found a calm little pool of water for them to stand in, but we had to fotograph pretty quickly because the water was freakin' FREEZING!! I actually thought it was quite refreshing....

I love this one : )

We decided to take a lunch break back at Kelly's parents house, so we stopped at a wonderful little deli in in the "Little Italy" section of Millinocket.
The deli is called Orvieto, a Italian/American Market & Deli and made some of the most delicious panini's we've ever had! Go
figure!
After refueling, it was off for an excursion in Gerry's boat on the beautiful (and huge!) Ambajesus Lake.
This time Kelly + Mike brought their teddy bear of a puppy, named Bruin with them to include him in some fotos.

Bruin likes beer too : )

Most of the time when Kelly's family goes out in the boat, they visit a little island in the middle of this huge lake called Little Porous Island. So we of course had to visit there! No one lives there but there are beach chairs and evidence of many a campfire for the folks that go and hang out there. Talk about a get away!
How cute is their puppy by the way? And yes he is a "puppy." Bruin is a Newfondland , and, believe it or not he is only about half the size he'll grow to be!
Kelly is going to look like a midget next to her Bruin when he is full grown!

What a cute family!

I love the "puppy" legs and paws.....Bruin has the clumsy puppy walk!

Getting back on the boat for the ride back. Mike can still pick Bruin up, but not for much longer I'm sure! Bruin just had an operation,
so he had to take it easy and not jump to much.

We had the most spectular, warm, buttery light for the ride back to shore.

Another one of my favorites of the day.....ah!

Back to shore, we took made some fotographs of the family on the dock.

Paul's glorious shot!

My glorious shot!

Paul's angle. This was after Bruin got to close the edge and fell in!

Kelly, thank you for having us up to your "neck of the woods" (literally), and to your dad, Gerry,
for being our personal Maine tour guide for the day!
We enjoyed getting some fresh Maine air and spending some relaxing time with you in this beautiful state and are looking forward to see you and your family at your wedding at the Lake of Isles next weekend!
Until then, Cheers!
